Job Description

Background

The Communications Unit leads and supports the UNDP Pakistan Country Office in cultivating, building and nurturing strategic relationships and alliances that are essential for advancing and successfully achieving the mission of UNDP. Within the Country Office Pakistan, the Communications Unit leads and manages external communications through strategy, media, digital communications, marketing, branding and global storytelling.The Senior Communications Associate is part of the Communications team, responsible for supporting implementation of a digital communications strategy, including UNDP’s bi-lingual Pakistan web site and all aspects of digital media channels. S/he will be responsible for supporting and implementing cutting-edge multi-media and social media approaches, products, services, and platforms, including current and future digital channels with increased attention to mobile platforms.

Reporting to the Communications Analyst, the Senior Communications Associate is responsible for producing and supporting digital and social media production, supporting country offices, and supporting the Online Team. S/he is expected to have good administrative skills and strong written and verbal communications skills.

Under the supervision of the Communications Analyst, the Senior Communications Associate is responsible for supporting production, writing, editing and uploading of content to the UNDP country office website and social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, etc.). The Senior Communications Associate will also support the Communications Analyst in developing and managing media/press coverage and overseeing the production of a range of communications materials (Press Releases, Fact Sheets, Stories from the field, etc.) for UNDP, including for the UNDP Corporate Office website, and for online and offline audiences.

The Senior Communications Associate will ensure that communications and advocacy strategies, media relations and organizational outreach efforts are aligned with corporate communications policies and initiatives. S/he also collaborates with project communications focal persons to support outreach campaigns, activities and special events organized for UNDP.


Duties and Responsibilities


Supports the implementation of online and multimedia communications strategies:
  • Copy-edit and post stories, tweets, images and videos on the corporate website using various tools including the global Content Management System, and social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and YouTube;
  • Support country office digital operations by providing information to communications and web focal points in project offices in Pakistan;
  • Support to increased awareness of UNDP’s mandate and goals through dissemination of information, organization of public events;
  • Researches and retrieves data from internal and external sources; and
  • Provide suggestions, inputs, content development, coordination of on-line communications services.

Manage the Pakistan Country Office Website
  • Ensure that the website is updated regularly;
  • Coordinate the compilation of all online content from field offices to be published on the website and manage the editorial process;
  • Work with the HQ website specialist in troubleshooting technical issues;
  • Coordinate the Urdu translation;
  • Write, edit and post a range of online content to keep the website accurate and up-to-date;
  • Produce multimedia content, including infographics, video, photos and e-newsletters.


Maintain Social Media Outreach:
  • Write, edit and manage social media content to engage audiences on the regional platforms;
  • Liaise with field offices to compile success stories to be published on social media platforms;
  • Organize Tweetathons and Twitter chats for community mobilization;
  • Liaise with UNDP headquarters to make sure social media plans are in sync and supportive of global campaigns.

Work with project staff to generate content including stories of success from the field
  • Travel to the project sites all over Pakistan and draft stories of success;
  • Interview key beneficiaries and staff of UNDP on the project site;


Maintain Media Outreach to enhance UNDP’s visibility
  • Support generating news and success stories from field offices in the region;
  • Support media relations in the region to enhance the positioning of UNDP within the media, with a special focus on regional priority areas of concern; this would involve drafting and disseminating press-releases and coordinating the translation of global media material in the region;
  • Set-up and manage regional contact databases.
  • Support the production of publications, brochures, press kits and fact sheets to inform media and the general public on the work of UNDP in the region, and its global mandate and inter-linkages.
  • Ensure media coverage for UNDP’s events and liaise with journalists from both print and broadcast media;
  • Maintain and update list of media contacts for both national and international news agencies in Pakistan
  • Manage the community mobilization and implementation of events under the campaign.

Provide advice and support to UNDP special events and campaigns
  • Support the implementation of UNDP events and/or UN campaigns in Pakistan;
Provide inputs and support the organization of special events in the region with a view to reaching wider audiences; to that end, contribute to conceiving concepts and developing relevant materials.

Qualification & Experience
  • Secondary Education. University degree in communications, journalism, public relations, social sciences, international relations, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in communications or related relevant field at the national or international level. Experience in online outreach and multimedia is essential;
  • Excellent IT skills preferred, including confidence with web-based applications, and knowledge of HTML, as well as video and photo editing and design software;
  • Excellent understanding of social media and online communication and media tools;
  • Experience required in editing and copywriting skills, including articles, reports, social media content, press releases preferred;
  • Familiarity with development issues required. Familiarity with UNDP and UN system is an asset.
  • Outstanding oral and written communications and editing skills, with proven ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently to the project sites in Pakistan.

Language Requirements:

Fluency in English (written and oral) and Urdu
